Ash Wednesday Devotion

1. Prepare your heart for worship with this song: Hosanna!
2. Read the scripture, first out of the NIV and then out of The Message

18 Like a madman shooting
firebrands or deadly arrows

19 is a man who deceives his neighbor
and says, "I was only joking!"

18-19 People who shrug off deliberate deceptions,
saying, "I didn't mean it, I was only joking,"

who walk away from smoldering campfires.

3.Think about it. It is Ash Wednesday, the day we begin preparing our hearts for Easter. For 40 days, the people of the church traditionally give up something that they believe will give them more time to devote to God. On this Ash Wednesday, let's pledge to go 40 days without making fun of somebody and then saying, "just kidding." Why? Because Proverbs tells us that it is wrong!

4. Pray: Thank God for the people in your life who help build you up and make you feel good about yourself. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart so that you can see people who need your words of kindness to help them feel better about themselves. Tell God what is on your mind, what is bothering you, and ask for help in dealing with these problems.

5. Listen: Ask God to show you what He would have you do today, and then be still and listen

Welcome to the devotion blogspot of the LHUMC 4Him Middle School Sunday School class.
Here you will find
-Worship Music: this group of songs are from a list of favorite songs compiled by our Sunday School class a couple of weeks ago.
-Weekly Devotions: each devotion is meant to take about 5 minutes. Get your Bible and begin your devotion. First, turn the volume up on your computer so that you can hear the worship music. Second, find the Bible verse in your version of the Bible. I usually use the Message
Note: if you want your own copy of The Message with a homemade Bible cover in your choice of material (!)read your devotions for six weeks, and then tell either me by responding to this blog, or your small group leader in the Sunday School class.

Devotions February 23- February 28 (The week Lent begins)
Day 2

1. Prepare your heart for worship with this song: “From the Inside Out” (at the bottom of the playlist!)

2. Read the scripture
11 For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
12 He has removed our sins as far from us
as the east is from the west.
13 The LORD is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
Psalm 103:11-13
3. Think about it. The word “fear” in this sense means “having profound honor and respect, being in awe.” When we honor God with our worship, when we respect God enough to love everyone he has made, including the hard to love, his love for us never ends. Better yet, when we admit to God we have messed up and ask Him to forgive us, he takes our sins, our wrong doing away, “as far as the east is from the west.” What a promise!

4. Pray: Thank God for his love that is so big for you that it never ends and for forgiving and even forgetting the sins you ask him to forgive you for. Thank God for three specific good things that happened yesterday, or that you saw. Tell God what is on your mind, what is bothering you, and ask for help in dealing with these problems.

5. Listen: Ask God to show you what He would have you do today, and then be still and listen.
Good job spending a few minutes of your day with God!

Devotions February 23-28

Devotions February 23- February 28 (The week Lent begins)
Day I

1. Prepare your heart for worship with this song: I’m Coming Back to the Heart of Worship.
2. Read the scripture

“I’m feeling terrible –I couldn’t feel worse! Get me on my feet again. You promised, remember? When I told you my story, you responded, train me well in your deep wisdom. Help me understand these things, inside and out so I can ponder your miracle-wonders.” Psalm 119:25-28 The Message

3. Think about it. In this Psalm, David, the writer of the psalm is crying out to God to help him. In his sadness and pain, David remembers that God made the promise to always answer our prayers. David reminds God of another time when he prayed and God responded by helping David better understand the wisdom of the Bible. Understanding God’s word helped David see the beauty around him more clearly.

4. Pray: Thank God for three things that happened yesterday that gave you joy. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart so that you can see the many blessings around you. Tell God what is on your mind, what is bothering you, and ask for help in dealing with these problems.

5. Listen: Ask God to show you what He would have you do today, and then be still and listen.

Devotion February 19

1. Prepare your heart for worship with this song: Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord
by Mercy Me
2. Read the scripture
No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" - but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.
-1 Corinthians 2:910 (NIV)
3. Think about it. When we read God’s word, we discover the wonderful things God has prepared for us, things like hope, joy, and peace. And all we have to do is open our hearts and minds to God, read the Bible, and offer God praise and thanks. Then we will have hope, joy and peace. It’s a promise, and God keeps promises.

4. Pray: Thank God for three things that happened yesterday that gave you joy. Ask God to open the eyes of your heart so that you can see the many blessings around you. Tell God what is on your mind, what is bothering you, and ask for help in dealing with these problems.

Devotion February 18

Devotion February 18
1. Set the mood for your worship by listening to this worship song “Word of God Speak” by Mercy Me

2. Read the scripture:
1 Samuel 3:6-10 (The Message) 6-7 GOD called again, "Samuel, Samuel!"
Samuel got up and went to Eli, "I heard you call. Here I am."
Again Eli said, "Son, I didn't call you. Go back to bed." (This all happened before Samuel knew GOD for himself. It was before the revelation of GOD had been given to him personally.)
8-9 GOD called again, "Samuel!"—the third time! Yet again Samuel got up and went to Eli, "Yes? I heard you call me. Here I am."
That's when it dawned on Eli that GOD was calling the boy. So Eli directed Samuel, "Go back and lie down. If the voice calls again, say, 'Speak, GOD. I'm your servant, ready to listen.'" Samuel returned to his bed.
10 Then GOD came and stood before him exactly as before, calling out, "Samuel! Samuel!"
Samuel answered, "Speak. I'm your servant, ready to listen."

3. Think about it: Samuel pops up out of his bed ready to do whatever Eli needs him to do. And God speaks to him. Do you think Samuel’s eager willingness to serve is why God speaks to him?
4. Pray: Think of three things about yesterday that you can thank God for. Ask God to help you to be eager and willing to serve Him.
5. Listen: Say, as Samuel did, “Speak, God. I’m your servant, ready to listen,” and then sit for a couple of minutes and listen for what God has for you.

Devotion February 17

2. Read the scripture:
1 Samuel 3:1-5 (The Message)
1 Samuel 3
"Speak, God. I'm Ready to Listen"
1-3The boy Samuel was serving GOD under Eli's direction. This was at a time when the revelation of GOD was rarely heard or seen. One night Eli was sound asleep (his eyesight was very bad—he could hardly see). It was well before dawn; the sanctuary lamp was still burning. Samuel was still in bed in the Temple of GOD, where the Chest of God rested.
4-5 Then GOD called out, "Samuel, Samuel!"
Samuel answered, "Yes? I'm here." Then he ran to Eli saying, "I heard you call. Here I am."
Eli said, "I didn't call you. Go back to bed." And so he did.
3. Think about it: Samuel yearned for God. In fact, he had dedicated his life to God. He was even sleeping in His holy temple. But, he didn’t recognize God’s voice calling him. When has God spoken to you, and you did not recognize God’s voice? Perhaps God’s spirit has moved you to do something kind for someone, and because you didn’t recognize the voice as God’s, you didn’t do it.

4. Pray: Give thanks for three things that happened to you yesterday, or that you saw that you know to be God’s spirit moving in your life. Pray that you will be sensitive to God’s voice. Pray that you will believe God has a plan for you this day, this hour, and that you will be willing to do what God calls you to do.

5. Listen for what God has planned for you today.

Devotion 1: February 16

Welcome to our devotion website for 4Him youth!!
This week's devotions will follow our class lesson, and hopefully help you delve deeper into God's Word so that you can experience the grace and love that is God daily.

1. Worship:
Here is a worship song to get you started. Click on this link. It will take you to a youtube video of Hillsong United's From the Inside Out

2. Read the Scripture:

The LORD appeared to us in the past,saying:
"I have loved you with an everlasting love;
I have drawn you with loving-kindness. Jeremiah 31:3

3. Reflect:
God's love lasts forever.
God pulls us to Him with loving kindness!!
If we want others to see God, we must draw them with loving kindness.

4. Give thanks:
Thank God for three good things from yesterday (perhaps something good that happened, something good you saw, someone who showed you God's face!)

5. Ask God to help you draw others to Him with loving kindness.

6. Listen for a few minutes. See what God has for you today!
